So you’re interested in Karate, or have just started training. The following information is designed to give you some useful advice in your early training days.

What Is Karate?

Karate is an ancient Japanese martial art developed over the last 200 years. It is not only an excellent form of self-defence but also a fun method of staying fit and healthy. Karate is a useful method of developing strength, agility and stamina as well as an excellent way of honing mental skills and developing discipline.

Who is Karate for?

CKA’s motto is “Karate for All”. Men, women, young and old – all are welcome, as long as you are over 7 years of age. Fitness and flexibility don’t matter as these will develop as you progress.

Where can I train?

CKA has 4 dojos (training halls) throughout the Chilterns. After completing a beginner’s course, students can train at any of our dojos.

What do I need to bring?

Just yourself and an open mind! There are no dress requirements for beginners’ courses, just wear loose fitting, comfortable clothing. However most students wear a gi (white suit) after their first grading. These can be purchased from CKA or specialist sports shops.

What can I expect?

A friendly, supportive environment to learn about Karate. As part of training, students will develop fitness and self-confidence in an enjoyable and exciting manner. Karate is good exercise for body, mind and spirit.

Beginners’ courses

We accept beginners all year round. This means you can start training at any time. Throughout the year, we run specific beginners’ courses – the starting dates are usually the second week in January and the third weeks of both March and September. A beginner’s course is the most cost effective way to get started, giving you six lessons for the price of five.

As well as being one of the most effective forms of self defence, Shotokan Karate is an exciting and enjoyable way to keep fit.

The beginners’ course consists of six lessons and has been developed to cater for people of all ages and levels of fitness. You will be training with other people of the same standard and will not be asked to do anything beyond your capabilities.

The course will cover basic exercises and easy to learn karate moves. These will be taught in a safe, friendly, nurturing environment.

The course provides a good introduction to this fascinating art and by the end of the six lessons you will almost be ready for your first grading, which is blue belt.

Every student in the Chiltern Karate Association started on similar beginners courses. Some have made it to the coveted black belt and others are long on the way. You too can achieve this.

What are the costs?

A 6-week introductory course costs £25 (£20 for children – over 7 years old only). After that, you pay as and when you train. Current training fees are £5 per session (£4 for under 16s), and family rates are also available.
